In September 1944 it was thought that 'Operation Market Garden' would bring a speedy end to World War II. This bold attempt to 'Bounce the Rhine' was to end in failure with the dramatic battle of the bridge over the River Rhine at Arnhem. The fact that bridges had been captured intact between Eindhoven and Arnhem was all to come to nothing with the failure to secure the final bridge at Arnhem. The war would not end in 1944, it would drag on for another long eight months. Follow the story of this epic campaign on our new tour.

Our Specialist Battlefields Guides

First World War tours will usually be guided by Paul Reed. With an MA in history, almost 16 years’ experience as a military history researcher, lecturer and battlefields guide - as well as being the author of five definitive books on WWI - Paul’s tours make history come to life. Paul has also appeared on the BBC2 programmes ‘Meet the Ancestors’ and ‘Timewatch’. With over 20 years experience Second World War, tours have been selected by Tony Lea. Besides being a popular guide, he is also curator of the Merville Battery in Normandy and frequent contributor to historical T.V. documentaries. He will be leading most of the WWII tours. Tony is assisted by Bill McQuade, a specialist in many areas, in particular the allied aircraft bombing raids over Germany and the history of escape attempts from prisons of war. When Paul, Tony and Bill are not available, another one of our carefully selected team of Specialist Battlefields Guides will accompany you instead, all of them experts in their own right.
